There has been a huge ceremony going on at the mother temple, Pura Besakih, over the last month. It happens every 10 years, and there are nonstop sacrifices, including blood sacrifices, being performed. This is a picture from a different area, but it gives you the idea of what a road can turn into when there's a ceremony on.
At Besakih, the newspaper said that not only cars and motorbikes were stuck, but even people had trouble walking on the roads because of the crowds.
Most of our neighbors made it up for at least one day of the ceremony. Typically, they would leave in the afternoon and not make it home until late (around 2-3 am).
