The Progression to Baldness

Kaelen started to pull her hair out about a month ago.  It was pretty cute at first.  She would pull out a couple of hairs as she got tired, and she would use the hair to kind of rub/tickle her nose or ear.  Apparently it helped her to fall asleep.

The cuteness quickly disappeared, and patchy baldness started to emerge.  Friends, neighbors, and complete strangers would ask us what was wrong with our child...

It is very common here in Indonesia to shave your child's head.  It is believed that it makes the hair thicker, more even, and attractive.  So we started to hear a lot of people telling us that we REALLY needed to shave her head.

At first we were opposed to the idea of shaving her head.  After all, she was just starting to get some cute little curls around her ears...  however as the questions progressed and the spotty baldness got more and more advanced, we began to consider the idea.

Then came the headbands.  Surely the headbands would cover up the baldness and stop all the questions and stares while giving her time to break the habit and grow some more hair.  This solution didn't last long.  Pretty soon it was hopeless... we knew what had to be done.

She actually enjoyed the whole shaving of the head process.  She quietly tried to watch as all of her sweet little hairs came off.  Then later that night she tried in vain to get some hair to tickle her nose with.  So hopefully it's done and the habit will be broken...

So here she is now.  Looking just like a cue ball.

On the Edge

A few things about Kaelen... she is smiling and goofy and silly all the time, EXCEPT for when anyone is taking a picture.  Then she...
