The Indonesian general elections are less than a month away. All major offices are up for grabs. For the last six months, the island has become more and more filled with political banners, flags, billboards, etc.
The interesting thing about Indonesia is that we have 44 political parties here. Yep, that's right, 44. There are nationalist parties, religious parties, labor parties, and young people parties. And each party has multiple candidates running for a single legislative seat. This results in 4 huge voting cards with hundreds of names to choose from. Apparently it can be quite a confusing process. TV and newspapers have been full of ads trying to instruct the general population on the correct way to fill out the massive voting card.
I didn't get pictures of my favorite posters that have shown the candidates in ways that we would never see in the States. One has a candidate with a raised fist who is wearing his volleyball uniform and a baseball cap, a picture of him spiking a volleyball is in the background. Another one has a candidate shooting pool with a big grin (pool is associated with a lot of shady activities). The best one is of a young guy with a yellow mohawk and sleeveless shirt, only his nickname, "Lolak", is mentioned on the poster...
It will be interesting to see how things turn out...
