The Olympics aren't that big of a deal over here, and most of our friends don't know or don't care about them. We have been trying to keep up with it as best we can. There is a local station that broadcasts an hour or so of the games every day. The following is part of an article from the Jakarta Post, talking about Indonesia's first medal of the games:
Eko Yuli Irawan (far right) secured Indonesia's first medal of the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Sunday, earning a bronze in the men's weightlifting 56-kilogram division.
Eko lifted a total of 288 kg, just behind champion Long Qingquan of China at 292 kg and silver medalist Hoang Anh Tuan of Vietnam at 290 kg. Eko lifted 130 kg in snatch and 158 kg in clean and jerk lift.
"I'm so proud to be able to create history for Indonesia. This is the first medal at the Beijing Olympics and also the first medal in the men's weightlifting event," said a jubilant Eko.The 19-year-old had set a target of winning a medal here. "It didn't matter what medal."
