Taking out the Kite

A bunch of our friends recently finished repairing our banjar's kite. It is about 18 feet long, and we worked on it for several days before it would fly just right. There are so many guidelines for what a good kite should fly like. It's amazing how so many here know how to make a kite fly in certain patterns. Bands of material are also added to the kite in order to make a loud noise that can only be described by saying it sounds like a helicopter.

On a normal day at our house around this time of year, it always sounds like there is a helicopter flying around because there are dozens of kites all making the same noise.

When the kite is done, the guys carry it through the streets (stopping traffic) to the rice fields at the end of our street. It's quite a big deal. When the kite is finally flying, we all just sit around in the rice field and criticize or admire kites that other banjars are flying that day.

p.s. the rice field in this video is at the end of our street. the houses that can be seen are at the end of our road, and we often take a short afternoon walk to see the rice fields, kites, and cows.
