The rice fields around our area were recently flooded in order to get them ready for the next round of planting. Whenever this happens, the water just sits in the fields for long periods of time. And what happens when you have huge amounts of undisturbed water in a tropical climate? You guessed it- mosquitoes.
Our house has openings in the front and back up near the ceiling. This lets the air pass through in the hopes of keeping things cool. These openings have screens over them to keep the nyamuk (mosquito) out. However, the person who installed them must have not known what he was doing (wait a minute, I'm the one who installed it...), because there have been unbelievable amounts of mosquitoes flying around inside our house for the last several days.
When we mention this situation to our friends and neighbors, they describe the mosquito problem with a cool Indonesian phrase, "Luar Biasa". It basically means "extraordinary, unreal, amazing, etc". So we know that if they think it's bad, it must really be bad.
At least the geckos are happy because they have plenty to eat as they sit near our front porch light and feast on the skeeters.
